Longhorns beat up on Aggies

Rivalry game goes to Texas with 49-9 win

The Texas Aggies were beaten, 49-9, Thursday by their cross state rivals, the Texas Longhorns.

Aggie Head Coach Mike Sherman will have a long winter to wonder what happened to the football program; and more importantly, how to fix it. The Aggies (4-8, 2-6 Big 12) ended their season in the statistical cellar of the Big 12 South division.

Longhorn Coach Mack Brown will have to wait to find out if their efforts impressed BCS pollsters. Texas (10-1, 7-1) finished the season in second place in the BCS. They are tied with Oklahoma and Texas Tech in the Big 12 South. The BCS rank may determine who will represent the tough South Division in the Big 12 Championship game.

The Longhorns dominated the Aggies in every way. The Aggie running game ended the night with a dismal -24 rushing. The Horns rolled up 526 yards of offense, 320 of that was passing.

Starting Quarterback Jerrod Johnson went three and out on the first three possessions. Johnson finished the night completing four for 11 passes for 62 yards and one TD. He was sacked once.

Senior Quarterback Stephen McGee briefly pumped life into the Aggie offense in the second quarter. He led an eight-play, 71-yard scoring drive. The drive was highlighted by a 54-yard catch and run by Tailback Michael Goodson. Randy Bullock kicked a field goal from the 37 for the Aggies’ first score.

Aggie quarterbacks were sacked six times. Goodson finished the night with six yards rushing.

McGee’s performance could only be described as gutsy. He told ESPN earlier that his shoulder was still hurting. Most of his passes were short. His 207 yards of passing came mostly on runs after the catch.

McGee passed 1960’s era quarterback Edd Hargett to move to No. 4 on A&M's career passing list with 5,475 yards. He also increased his career total offense numbers to 7,245, which ranks No. 2 in school history.

Aggie Tailback Cyrus Gray had a stellar day. He broke the freshman season record for all-purpose yards with 152 yards against the Horns. Gray finished his first season with 1,592 all-purpose yards which broke the old mark of 1,551 set by Dante Hall in 1996. Gray's 1,592 yards rank in a tie for No. 4 overall in school history (tied with running back Bob Smith in 1950).
