Big 12 Storylines Week Four

Week four in the Big 12 brought only a couple of good games and many games that were decided before the teams even snapped a football. This was a week were schools came in that were given big paychecks to get pasted by superior opponents. There were no matchups between Big 12 schools this week.

The game of the week was Texas Tech traveling to a hot Houston team. After defeating another Big 12 school in Oklahoma State in Stillwater earlier this season, the Cougars found themselves down most of the game. The Red Raiders then gave up the last nine points. Heisman trophy candidate Case Keenum led Houston on a 95 yard drive that culminated in Keenum running for a four yard touchdown and the 29-28 victory. After never having beaten a Big 12 school the Cougars have now won two in a row and are starting to dream about a BCS bid.

Missouri has not missed a beat with Blaine Gabbert under center. The Tigers went on the road in a tough place to play and defeated Nevada 31-21. Gabbert passed for 414 yards and three touchdowns. On the season he has passed for 1,161 yards and 11 touchdowns without throwing an interception.

Kansas got all they could handle against Southern Miss before Todd Reesing hit Kerry Meier for a fourth quarter touchdown for a 35-28 victory. Reesing passed for 331 yards and three touchdowns and Meier totaled 10 receptions for 141 yards and two touchdowns. The Jayhawks have flown under the radar so far despite starting 4-0.

Baylor’s season took a huge hit with the loss of their quarterback and best player Robert Griffin for the season on Saturday. Griffin suffered a knee injury on the opening series, but stayed in until halftime of the Bears 68-13 win over Northwestern State. He was then taken out in the second half after Baylor racked up its highest scoring first half in 15 years. The Bears are looking for their first Bowl bid since 1994, but losing Griffin now makes getting that bid a long shot this season. Senior Blake Szymanski looks like he will be taking over for Griffin under center.

Texas A&M quarterback Jerrod Johnson tied an Aggie record with three rushing touchdowns in A&M’s 56-19 win over UAB. Johnson passed for three more touchdowns for six on the day to go along with 351 total yards. Mike Sherman has to like what he sees from Johnson so far this season, as he has racked up an impressive 1157 total yards and 13 touchdowns.
