Aggies hopes dashed by Razorbacks, 47-19

It must have been the scoreboard. The Arkansas Razorbacks spotted the Texas A&M 10 points in the first quarter, then came roaring back with 30 unanswered points in the first half to beat the bedazzled Aggies, 47-19.

The Aggies played in the Cowboy’s new domed stadium in Arlington. It was the first meeting of the two old rivals since the Razorbacks jumped to the Southeastern Conference in 1991. This is the first game of a 10-game series between the Aggies and the Razorbacks.

When the Razorback defense put pressure on Aggie quarterback Jarrod Johnson, the game swung to Arkansas favor. At one point, the Aggies appeared to be on the verge of going ahead 17-0. Arkansas picked up a Johnson fumble on the Razorback nine-yard and ran it back for a TD. That made the score 14-10. It was the game changer. The Razorbacks never looked back after that. They added 17 more points to go up 30-10 at the half

Johnson was sacked only two times, but he was hit many more times. His passes were hurried often. The Aggies led in almost every statistical category, but the turnovers were timely and costly.

The Aggies are now 3-1 and begin Big 12 play at home against Oklahoma State next week at Kyle Field. The Aggies’ schedule is favorable. They play the tail-end teams in the Big 12 north, Kansas State, Iowa State, and Colorado.

Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett threw four touchdown passes. He was 17 of 27 for the night.

Aggie fans drifted out of the stands to walk around the stadium. The Arkansas fans stayed around to start a chant: “S-E-C, S-E-C”. It was a real confidence booster for the Razorbacks who had lost by lopsided scores to two ranked, SEC teams.

The Aggies must go back and try to put together the pieces and get the bright lights out of their eyes. Their season has crashed back to earth. They must win at least three more games – all against Big 12 teams -- to become bowl eligible.
