Texas A&M vs Oklahoma Preview

It’s been a roller coaster ride for the Aggie football team this year.

After being blasted, 64-14, by Kansas State, Texas A&M (5-3, 2-3 Big 12) roared back to beat then 21 st ranked Texas Tech and Iowa State. The Aggies put together 11 stellar quarters of football for Coach Mike Sherman. Aggies fell apart last week and lost to Colorado 35-34. A muffed punt and an interception sealed the Aggies fate. Sherman hopes that one bad quarter hasn’t put his team in a tailspin.

Saturday, the Aggies will find out when they play the Oklahoma Sooner (5-4, 3-2) in Norman, OK. The Sooners have had their problems too. Last week, the OU offense failed to cross the goal line. They fell to Nebraska 10-3. However, Las Vegas odds makers and most analysts believe the Sooners still have what it takes to win their seventh game in a row against the hapless Aggies. The current Aggie losing streak began in 2003 with the now infamous 77-0 debacle in Norman. Sooner Coach Bob Stoops is 9-1 against the Aggies. Last year, Sherman fell to the Sooners 68-28, the worst loss ever at Kyle Field.

Where the Sooners have had offensive problems at quarterback and the offensive line, the Aggies have had problems on defense. Last week, Colorado repeatedly made several first downs on third and long. The Aggie defense is ranked 10 th in the Big 12 against the run and pass and 10 th overall. The Aggies’ defense is ranked 95 th in the NCAA.

One bright spot for the defense is quarterback sacks. Sack-master linebacker Von Miller leads the Big 12 and the NCAA in sacks this season. Last week the Aggie defense sacked the CU QB eight times.

The Aggies are one game away from bowl eligibility. Covers.com lists the Aggies as much as a 20.5 point underdog to OU. Still left on the schedule are Baylor and the Texas Longhorns in Austin. However, the Baylor Bears are surging. They beat the defending Big 12 North champions, Missouri, on the road.

The Aggies badly need wide receiver Howard Morrow back in the lineup. He was out with an injury against CU. However, WR Ryan Swope filled in nicely against CU. Linebacker Garrick Williams is expected to play. He left the CU game with an ankle injury. Punt returner Dustin Harris’ ankle was to be revaluated day-to-day. His replacement, Terrence Frederick, muffed a punt and ended the Aggies’ only chance last week.

The game will kick off at 6 p.m. CST. Television broadcast will be on the Fox Sports Network. Sirius Satellite Radio will carry the game on Channel 154. The game also will be on the Aggie Sports Radio Network.
